Nigeria\u2019s digital economy is on an upward trajectory<\/strong>, as Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani<\/strong>, has unveiled transformative initiatives including a $2 billion fibre optic infrastructure rollout<\/strong>, a nationwide telecom tower deployment, and a surge in foreign direct investment (FDI).<\/p>\n

The announcement came during a pre-recorded interview for a State House documentary<\/strong> marking President Bola Tinubu\u2019s second year in office. Tijani confirmed that the rollout of 90,000km of fibre lines and 7,000 telecom towers<\/strong> will formally begin in Q4 2025<\/strong>, reinforcing Nigeria\u2019s tech-driven economic strategy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not chasing quick wins. These are foundational reforms that will reshape Nigeria\u2019s economy for generations,\u201d Tijani stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

FDI Soars Ninefold in 12 Months<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Tijani reported that the ICT sector attracted $191 million in FDI in Q1 2024<\/strong>, up dramatically from $22 million in Q1 2023<\/strong>\u2014a clear indication of renewed investor confidence under the Tinubu administration.<\/p>\n

The trend continued into Q2 2024<\/strong>, with investments rising from $25 million in 2023 to $114 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith robust policy reforms and sectoral focus, we are seeing Nigeria emerge as a global digital leader,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

3 Million Technical Talents (3MTT) Driving Workforce Transformation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The minister highlighted the success of the 3MTT programme<\/strong>, launched in October 2023, to upskill Nigerians for the global digital economy. The initiative has already trained 117,000+ Nigerians<\/strong>, surpassing its initial target of 30,000. An additional 35,000 are currently undergoing training.<\/p>\n

Tijani reaffirmed the administration\u2019s commitment to reaching the three million talent goal<\/strong> before the end of its tenure.<\/p>\n

$2 Billion Fibre Rollout and AI Innovation Take Center Stage<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dubbed Project Bridge<\/strong>, the infrastructure plan includes a $2 billion investment<\/strong> to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable\u2014aiming for 98% nationwide connectivity<\/strong> and aligning with the National Broadband Plan target of 90% penetration by 2025<\/strong> (currently at 48%).<\/p>\n

In addition, Tijani announced the deployment of 7,000 new telecom towers<\/strong>, with the project already approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA 10% increase in broadband hubs could raise GDP by 2.5%. That\u2019s the scale of our ambition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

AI Leadership and Startup Ecosystem Expansion<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Nigeria now ranks among the top 60 countries in AI readiness<\/strong>, thanks to initiatives like the AI Collective platform<\/strong>, backed by Google, Microsoft, and Pierre Omidyar<\/strong>. The ministry has funded 55 academic research projects<\/strong> in emerging technologies, and invested \u20a6300 million<\/strong> in 10 AI and blockchain startups<\/strong> focused on agriculture.<\/p>\n

Tijani also cited progress with the Nigeria Startup House in San Francisco<\/strong>, a project targeting $5 billion in startup funding<\/strong>, designed to connect Nigerian tech firms to global investors and government procurement pipelines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
