Abure-led LP faction targets prominent members as internal rift escalates; opposition coalition talks rejected<\/strong><\/p>\n

The internal crisis within the Labour Party (LP)<\/strong> has intensified, as the faction led by Julius Abure<\/strong> announced the indefinite suspension<\/strong> of several high-profile members, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti<\/strong> and Senator Ireti Kingibe<\/strong> of the Federal Capital Territory, over alleged anti-party activities.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by Umar Farouk Ibrahim<\/strong>, National Secretary of the Abure-led faction. The suspended members also include Darlington Nwokocha<\/strong>, Victor Afam Ogene<\/strong>, Amobi Ogah<\/strong>, and Seyi Sowunmi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Farouk revealed that the action followed the findings of a five-member disciplinary committee headed by Ayo Olorunfemi<\/strong>, the Deputy National Chairman, which was inaugurated on May 2. The party\u2019s National Executive Committee<\/strong> has reportedly ratified the panel\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe suspended individuals will no longer act for and on behalf of the Labour Party,\u201d Farouk stated, adding that the Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum<\/strong>, National Assembly<\/strong>, INEC<\/strong>, and security agencies<\/strong> have been notified.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Nenadi Usman Not Recognized as Member, Says Abure Camp<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Farouk also clarified why Nenadi Usman<\/strong>, head of the rival caretaker committee, was not among those suspended, stating that she is not a registered member<\/strong> of the party and therefore ineligible for internal disciplinary measures.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is a member of the Obidient Support Group and not an LP member. We won\u2019t dignify her with sanctions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

No Interest in Opposition Coalition, Abure Faction Declares<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In a firm rejection of ongoing discussions about forming a coalition of opposition parties<\/strong>, the Abure faction stated its non-participation<\/strong>, citing the \u201clack of capacity, character, and competence\u201d of its initiators.<\/p>\n

This move is seen as further distancing the LP faction from efforts aimed at consolidating opposition power ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n

Factional Divide Worsens as Usman Group Hits Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Labour Party is now split into two factions<\/strong> \u2014 the Abure-led group and the Usman-led caretaker committee<\/strong>, which has also initiated a separate investigation into Abure. Senator Ireti Kingibe<\/strong>, now suspended by the Abure faction, heads the panel investigating Abure on allegations of corruption, financial misconduct, and anti-party behavior<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
