The North alone cannot make a president; neither can the South,\u201d said Yakassai, 99. \u201cIt takes a popular, well-funded, and widely accepted candidate to win in today\u2019s political climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1301\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1354\"><strong data-start=\"1307\" data-end=\"1354\">ACF Distances Itself from Regional Rhetoric<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1356\" data-end=\"1685\">The <strong data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1394\">Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF)<\/strong> also distanced itself from Baba-Ahmed\u2019s claims, describing them as personal opinions rather than organizational positions. Its spokesperson, <strong data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1565\">Prof. Tukur Mohammed Baba<\/strong>, reiterated that Nigeria\u2019s constitutional provisions require <strong data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1654\">broad, national support<\/strong> for any presidential aspirant.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1687\" data-end=\"1817\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"1817\">\u201cNo one becomes president through regional votes alone. Nigerians must vote freely and without manipulation,\u201d Prof. Baba stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1998\">The ACF noted that its primary interest is ensuring electoral fairness, regardless of region, and that 2027\u2019s outcome will be determined by voter choice\u2014if free from interference.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2000\" data-end=\"2003\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2063\"><strong data-start=\"2009\" data-end=\"2063\">Election Integrity Under Threat, Stakeholders Warn<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2065\" data-end=\"2286\">Meanwhile, electoral stakeholders at a policy dialogue in Abuja have raised <strong data-start=\"2141\" data-end=\"2190\">alarm over the erosion of electoral integrity<\/strong>, linking it to widespread poverty, restricted civic freedoms, and increased voter manipulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2288\" data-end=\"2581\">Speaking at the event hosted by the <strong data-start=\"2324\" data-end=\"2394\">African Centre for Leadership, Strategy &amp; Development (Centre LSD)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2464\">Women\u2019s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA)<\/strong>, with support from the <strong data-start=\"2488\" data-end=\"2512\">MacArthur Foundation<\/strong>, experts expressed concern that Nigeria\u2019s democracy is under strain.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2583\" data-end=\"2761\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2585\" data-end=\"2761\">\u201cWith over 133 million Nigerians in multidimensional poverty, we face significant threats to free and fair elections,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"2709\" data-end=\"2726\">Monday Osasah<\/strong>, Executive Director of Centre LSD.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2935\">He added that electoral malpractices such as <strong data-start=\"2808\" data-end=\"2823\">vote-buying<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2828\" data-end=\"2874\">the exploitation of vulnerable populations<\/strong> have become systemic issues that distort democratic choices.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2937\" data-end=\"2940\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2942\" data-end=\"3014\"><strong data-start=\"2946\" data-end=\"3014\">Security, Poverty, and Civic Freedom Central to 2027 Credibility<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3016\" data-end=\"3275\">Traditional ruler <strong data-start=\"3034\" data-end=\"3055\">Alhaji Sani Jabbi<\/strong>, District Head of Gagi in Sokoto, stressed that <strong data-start=\"3104\" data-end=\"3118\">insecurity<\/strong> remains a major barrier to voter participation, warning that credible elections are impossible if whole communities are disenfranchised by violence or fear.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3277\" data-end=\"3391\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3279\" data-end=\"3391\">\u201cWhen parts of the population can\u2019t vote due to insecurity, democracy suffers. That\u2019s not justice,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3393\" data-end=\"3600\">WRAPA\u2019s <strong data-start=\"3401\" data-end=\"3436\">Secretary-General Saudatu Mahdi<\/strong> added that poverty, civic repression, and electoral malpractice form a dangerous trio that could derail Nigeria\u2019s next general elections if not addressed urgently.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3602\" data-end=\"3605\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3607\" data-end=\"3676\"><strong data-start=\"3611\" data-end=\"3676\">Looking Ahead: A Call for National Unity and Electoral Reform<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3678\" data-end=\"4013\">With political tensions rising ahead of the 2027 elections, Yakassai\u2019s and ACF\u2019s call for <strong data-start=\"3768\" data-end=\"3786\">national unity<\/strong> in leadership selection contrasts sharply with divisive regional rhetoric.
