{"id":7604,"date":"2025-04-11T07:50:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-11T07:50:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shakamomodu.com\/?p=7604"},"modified":"2025-04-11T07:50:07","modified_gmt":"2025-04-11T07:50:07","slug":"apapa-asserts-legitimacy-as-labour-party-chairman-cites-constitution-and-seniority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shakamomodu.com\/index.php\/2025\/04\/11\/apapa-asserts-legitimacy-as-labour-party-chairman-cites-constitution-and-seniority\/","title":{"rendered":"Apapa Asserts Legitimacy as Labour Party Chairman, Cites Constitution and Seniority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\" data-start=\"89\" data-end=\"356\"><em data-start=\"89\" data-end=\"112\">Abuja, April 11, 2025<\/em> \u2014 Amid ongoing leadership turbulence within the Labour Party (LP), <strong data-start=\"180\" data-end=\"196\">Lamidi Apapa<\/strong>, self-declared National Chairman, has reaffirmed his claim to the party\u2019s top position, citing constitutional backing and his seniority in the party hierarchy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"358\" data-end=\"671\">In an interview with <strong data-start=\"379\" data-end=\"393\">ARISE News<\/strong> on Thursday night, Apapa insisted that his emergence as leader is in full compliance with <strong data-start=\"484\" data-end=\"531\">Article 14 of the Labour Party Constitution<\/strong>, which stipulates that the <strong data-start=\"559\" data-end=\"587\">Deputy National Chairman<\/strong> assumes leadership when the substantive chairman is unable to discharge his duties.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"958\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"958\">\u201cIf the National Chairman of the party, for whatever reasons at all, is unable to perform his role as chairman, the Deputy Chairman of the party takes over. It&#8217;s automatic. I don&#8217;t have to derive authority from anybody because the constitution has allowed me to do that,\u201d Apapa said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"1155\">The embattled political figure further noted that among all deputy chairmen of the party, he holds the highest seniority and is next in rank to <strong data-start=\"1104\" data-end=\"1120\">Julius Abure<\/strong>, the now-ousted National Chairman.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1157\" data-end=\"1374\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1374\">\u201cUnfortunately, among all the Deputy National Chairmen, I happen to be the oldest. On the list of officers, I\u2019m the next person to Abure, which means I am the closest person to him in rank and everything,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1376\" data-end=\"1405\">Leadership Crisis Deepens<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1407\" data-end=\"1642\">Apapa\u2019s assertion comes at a time of deep division within the Labour Party following a <strong data-start=\"1494\" data-end=\"1545\">Certified True Copy of a Supreme Court judgment<\/strong> that confirmed the expiration of <strong data-start=\"1579\" data-end=\"1597\">Abure\u2019s tenure<\/strong> and his removal from the party&#8217;s leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1644\" data-end=\"1778\">The ruling has further complicated the already fractious leadership tussle, with various factions laying claim to the party\u2019s control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"1956\">Apapa, however, stated that his leadership is not a permanent takeover but rather a <strong data-start=\"1864\" data-end=\"1892\">transitional stewardship<\/strong>, meant to stabilize the party and restore constitutional order.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"2255\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1960\" data-end=\"2255\">\u201cI intend to stay for only six months,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I have declared that I will not contest for the office of National Chairman. I also intend to zone the chairmanship back to the North, in honour of our late chairman, <strong data-start=\"2181\" data-end=\"2213\">Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam<\/strong>, who died shortly after assuming office.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2257\" data-end=\"2427\">Apapa said this gesture would not only uphold internal party equity but also pave the way for a fresh leadership structure that reflects the party\u2019s geographical balance.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2429\" data-end=\"2462\">Tensions and Future Direction<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2464\" data-end=\"2710\">The leadership crisis has been a lingering distraction for the Labour Party, which has been attempting to consolidate gains from its performance in the <strong data-start=\"2616\" data-end=\"2642\">2023 general elections<\/strong>, where it emerged as a formidable third force in Nigerian politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2864\">Observers say the crisis, if left unresolved, may damage the party\u2019s reputation and reduce its viability ahead of upcoming state and national elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2866\" data-end=\"3030\">The Apapa faction has promised reforms and a more transparent leadership process, but the legitimacy of his claim remains contested within other camps in the party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3032\" data-end=\"3247\">Meanwhile, the <strong data-start=\"3047\" data-end=\"3099\">Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)<\/strong> has yet to issue an official statement clarifying which faction it recognizes, leaving the political status of the Labour Party in a state of flux.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abuja, April 11, 2025 \u2014 Amid ongoing leadership turbulence within the Labour Party (LP), Lamidi Apapa, self-declared National Chairman, has reaffirmed his claim to the party\u2019s top position, citing constitutional backing and his seniority in the party hierarchy.
