He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu remains dedicated to fostering a thriving workforce and an efficient labour ecosystem in the country.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"475\" data-end=\"801\">Speaking on Thursday during a meeting at the State House, Abuja, with the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Mr. Gilbert Houngbo, and Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Muhammad Dingyadi, Shettima praised Nigeria\u2019s vibrant labour movement for its significant role in national development.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"860\"><strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"860\">Key Points from Vice President Shettima\u2019s Speech:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"2378\">\n<li data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"1194\">\n<p data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"1194\"><strong data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"899\">Commitment to Workers\u2019 Welfare:<\/strong> Shettima acknowledged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for its commitment to workers&#8217; rights and expressed the government&#8217;s support for fair wages and a thriving workforce. He highlighted that the national minimum wage had been raised, with many states exceeding the agreed N70,000 threshold.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1196\" data-end=\"1634\">\n<p data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1634\"><strong data-start=\"1198\" data-end=\"1238\">Youthful Population as an Advantage:<\/strong> Shettima pointed to Nigeria&#8217;s youthful demographic, with an average age of just 16.9 years, as a critical asset. He noted that by 2050, Nigeria will become the third most populous country globally, surpassing the United States, and the government is working to transform this demographic potential into a \u201cdemographic dividend\u201d through appropriate policies and investments in skills development.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1636\" data-end=\"2045\">\n<p data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"2045\"><strong data-start=\"1638\" data-end=\"1680\">Digital Literacy and Future Workforce:<\/strong> Emphasizing the importance of equipping Nigeria\u2019s youth for the global economy, Shettima pointed out that young Nigerians are digitally more literate than previous generations, positioning them to seize new opportunities in the evolving job market. He commended Nigeria\u2019s support for his election as ILO Director-General, noting that Nigeria&#8217;s mobilisation of African constituents was instrumental to his success.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2824\" data-end=\"3210\">Houngbo also appealed to the Nigerian government to expedite the finalisation of the reform of the country\u2019s labour code and called for the revival of the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC), a forum for social dialogue among Nigeria&#8217;s tripartite constituents. He stressed that reviving the NLAC would be highly beneficial for Nigeria\u2019s dynamic labour market and its role in Africa.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3212\" data-end=\"3266\"><strong data-start=\"3216\" data-end=\"3266\">Additional Government Support and Discussions:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"3268\" data-end=\"3973\">\n<li data-start=\"3268\" data-end=\"3539\">\n<p data-start=\"3270\" data-end=\"3539\"><strong data-start=\"3270\" data-end=\"3307\">National Labour Advisory Council:<\/strong> Houngbo underscored the importance of the NLAC as a platform for dialogue among government, employers, and labour unions.
