The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims of civilian casualties during the recent airstrikes targeting Lakurawa terrorists in Sokoto State. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, clarified that secondary explosions, not the military\u2019s airstrikes, were responsible for any reported harm to civilians.<\/p>\n
According to Buba, the operation, which combined air and land assaults under Operation Fansan Yamma, specifically targeted terrorist hideouts in Gidan Bissah and Gidan Rotuwa, leading to significant successes.<\/p>\n
\u201cIntelligence consistently indicated the area was a hub for Lakurawa terrorists. Airstrikes hit their logistic base, causing secondary explosions that resulted in unintended consequences,\u201d Buba stated. He emphasized that the military exercised extreme caution to minimize civilian harm despite the terrorists blending into the local population.<\/p>\n
The DHQ also expressed condolences to any families affected, reiterating that every civilian casualty is deeply regretted. However, Buba stressed that the military remains committed to eradicating terrorism while protecting citizens and maintaining territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
Addressing concerns over Boko Haram and ISWAP\u2019s acquisition of drones, the military assured Nigerians there is no imminent threat. The drones in question, described by Buba as \u201ctoys,\u201d lack the capability to deliver substantial harm. \u201cThese are not military-grade drones. They are used more for harassment than effective attacks,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
He added that measures are in place to counter any attempts by terrorists to escalate drone usage.<\/p>\n
The DHQ also reiterated that Nigeria does not host any foreign military bases and has no intention of becoming a proxy battleground for global powers. \u201cAnyone suggesting otherwise is being mischievous and spreading misinformation,\u201d Buba stated.<\/p>\n
