The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed that its 2025 National Convention will proceed as scheduled this weekend in Ibadan, Oyo State, despite a recent court ruling restraining the event.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, PDP’s National Publicity Secretary and Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) Publicity Subcommittee, the party dismissed rumours of postponement. Ologunagba emphasized that the convention will hold from Saturday, November 15, to Sunday, November 16, 2025.
PDP Accuses APC of Attempting to Destabilize Opposition
Ologunagba alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is behind attempts to derail the opposition’s activities and impose a one-party system in Nigeria.
“We are aware of plots by the APC to destabilize the opposition and impose a one-party state. This will be lawfully resisted,” he said.
The NWC and NCOC reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a successful and transparent national convention. “We thank Nigerians for their overwhelming support and welcome all delegates, party leaders, and supporters arriving in Ibadan for the event,” the statement added.
Fayose: PDP ‘Decaying from the Head’
Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, expressed concern over the PDP’s internal crisis, blaming it on leadership failure. Speaking on a live television programme, Fayose said the party’s decline started from the top.
“When fish decays from the body, you can salvage it. But when it decays from the head, you cannot,” he remarked.
Fayose, who insisted he would never leave the PDP, predicted more defections from the party, claiming that three governors had already defected and more would follow soon.
“Governor of Plateau will leave next. After him, another will follow,” Fayose warned.
Olafeso Condemns Court Order, Says Convention Will Hold
Also speaking on the programme, former PDP National Vice Chairman, Eddy Olafeso, criticized the Federal High Court’s restraining order against the convention, describing it as “judicial rascality.”
Olafeso alleged that certain individuals were working to destroy the PDP and entrench a one-party system in Nigeria.
“We will not allow this. Good will prevail over evil. The truth and justice must prevail,” he asserted.
Despite the legal setback, Olafeso maintained that the PDP remains focused on holding its national convention as planned in Ibadan.
