Oba of Benin Rejects Iyaloja Concept in Edo Markets, Insists on Traditional Iyeki System

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has firmly rejected the introduction of the Iyaloja title into Edo markets, stressing that the role is alien to Benin culture and traditions.

The monarch clarified that in Benin, the Iyeki (market leader) performs cultural duties beyond coordinating traders, and such leaders maintain a direct relationship with the palace.

Tinubu’s Daughter Visits Palace

Oba Ewuare made the remarks when Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and Iyaloja General, visited the palace to announce the planned inauguration of Pastor Josephine Ivbazebule as Iyaloja of all markets in Edo State.

In response, the monarch explained that the Iyeki system had long existed in the kingdom, and market leaders must be selected by traders and later confirmed by the palace.

Iyeki Has Sacred Duties

Oba Ewuare noted that each Iyeki has cultural responsibilities, including rituals at shrines located in markets:

“Iyaloja is alien to us here in Benin. Every Iyeki has a special relationship with the palace and performs cultural roles in the market shrine on behalf of the Oba.”

Chief Explains Palace Position

Chief Osaro Idah, speaking on behalf of the monarch, further explained that every market in Benin—such as Oba Market and Ogiso Market—selects its own Iyeki independently.

He stressed that the idea of a general market leader across Edo was foreign to Benin customs:

“The novelty of a general Iyeki is alien to Benin tradition. Each market has its own Iyeki, and none has authority over another.”

Cultural Assertion

The palace reaffirmed that the Benin monarchy would continue to uphold its cultural heritage, insisting that the Iyeki institution remains the authentic system for market leadership in the kingdom.
