New restrictions take effect immediately; prior visas remain valid as US pushes global reciprocity and tighter immigration controls

The United States Department of State has updated its non-immigrant visa policy for Nigerian citizens, announcing that most visas will now be issued as single-entry with a three-month validity period.

In a press release from the US Embassy in Abuja on Tuesday, the new rule was described as part of Washington’s global visa reciprocity process, which aims to align visa terms with those granted to US citizens by other countries.

“Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the statement read.

The change takes immediate effect, though the embassy clarified that any US visas issued before July 8, 2025, will retain their original status and validity.

Visa Standards Aimed at Immigration Security

According to the US Mission, the new visa terms are part of efforts to uphold the integrity of US immigration systems by aligning with global technical and security benchmarks.

These benchmarks include:

  • Secure travel documentation

  • Visa overstay management

  • Information sharing on security and criminal records

“The US Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” the statement added.

Diplomatic Relations Still Intact

Despite the restrictions, the US reaffirmed its strong diplomatic and bilateral relationship with Nigeria, emphasizing a commitment to mutual respect, economic growth, and security cooperation.

“We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices.”

Nigerian citizens are urged to:

  • Adhere strictly to visa terms

  • Ensure travel documents are valid and authentic

  • Avoid overstays and document inconsistencies

Partnership Beyond Policy

While the changes may pose challenges to Nigerian travellers, the US Embassy reassured the public of its support for continued educational, cultural, and business exchange between both nations.

“We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels with the Nigerian public and government officials to ensure safe and lawful travel between the United States and all countries,” the US Mission stated.
