Presidential Aide Aliyu Audu Resigns, Cites Threat to Nigeria’s Democracy

Aliyu Audu, the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, has tendered his resignation, raising serious concerns about what he describes as an unfolding push toward a one-party political structure in Nigeria.

In a letter dated June 8, 2025, and submitted through Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Audu announced that his decision takes immediate effect. While he voiced continued support for President Tinubu’s economic reforms, Audu stated that remaining in the administration would compromise his conscience and commitment to democratic ideals.

“I am not defecting to the PDP or any other party,” Audu emphasized. “But I cannot support any agenda that seeks to silence dissenting political voices.”

The former presidential aide criticized what he called disturbing political realignments aimed at consolidating power within a single dominant party—moves he argues are deeply at odds with the foundational principles of democracy.

“True leadership thrives on the contest of ideas and inclusivity,” Audu said. “Democracy must allow for opposition, debate, and diversity of thought.”

Describing his resignation as a principled decision rather than a rebellious act, Audu cited a moral obligation to stand against the narrowing of Nigeria’s political space. He warned that history has shown the dangers of suppressing opposition, urging immediate course correction to preserve the nation’s democratic progress.

Though stepping down from his official role, Audu pledged to remain an active voice in Nigeria’s national discourse, advocating for democratic integrity and open governance from outside government.
