Cambridge, UK – Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has said that with the right leadership—one marked by competence, compassion, and commitment—Nigeria can become the “beacon of hope” for Africa, and the continent can rise to global prominence.
Obi made the statement on Sunday while addressing a pan-African audience of young leaders at the Africa Together Conference hosted by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. The event was themed “The Making of Africa’s Future Presidents.”
Obi Champions Youth Engagement and Leadership Reform
Sharing highlights from his keynote address via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi emphasized the need for Africa’s youth to take charge of the continent’s future.
“I was delighted to interact with these youths drawn from different African countries… I remain committed to empowering them to shape Africa’s future,” he said.
Obi urged participants to dismantle systemic corruption and focus on long-term development through investments in education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation—pillars he considers non-negotiable for sustainable growth.
Comparative Lessons From Asia
Drawing on global examples, Obi cited countries like China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam—nations that have transformed their economies through sustained investments and disciplined governance.
“These nations demonstrate how visionary leadership and a focus on human development can uplift entire populations,” he noted.
Obi encouraged African nations to follow suit by prioritizing social investments and removing “rascality in governance.”
A Call for Competent Leadership in Africa
In his message to Nigerian citizens, Obi reiterated the importance of electing leaders with proven character, capacity, and compassion.
“With competent, committed, and compassionate leadership, Nigeria can become a beacon of hope, and Africa will rise,” he said.
He thanked the African Society at the University of Cambridge for hosting the event and lauded the participating youth for their passion and engagement.
“As we build a New Nigeria, everyone must get involved by supporting and electing leaders with vision and integrity,” he concluded.
