Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – May 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its full commitment to the timely delivery of the $3 billion Agge Deep Seaport in Bayelsa State—an ambitious infrastructure project expected to transform the Niger Delta’s economic landscape, stimulate job creation, and attract both local and foreign investment.

Speaking over the weekend at a marine safety sensitisation event in Yenagoa, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, highlighted the Agge Seaport as a cornerstone of the Tinubu administration’s Blue Economy agenda.

“This project aligns with our broader vision to revitalise Nigeria’s maritime potential and economic development,” Oyetola stated. “We are working closely with key stakeholders to ensure swift execution.”

Once operational, the Agge Deep Seaport will:

  • Serve as a major international maritime gateway in the South-South

  • Ease pressure on existing ports

  • Drive investment in logistics, fisheries, shipbuilding, and tourism

  • Create thousands of direct and indirect jobs

Oyetola also praised Governor Douye Diri for his administration’s support and shared vision. Represented by Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Diri emphasized the port’s potential to unlock new trade and development opportunities for Bayelsa and the wider Nigerian economy.

“We urge the federal government to turn its words into action. The Agge Seaport is a national economic asset,” Ewhrudjakpo said.

In a parallel effort to improve safety across Nigeria’s inland waterways, Oyetola also launched the distribution of 3,500 life jackets in Bayelsa State as part of a nationwide marine safety campaign.

“This initiative is a life-saving mission,” Oyetola said. “It’s our response to rising waterway accidents. Safety is non-negotiable.”

Bayelsa is among 12 states selected in the first phase of the program aimed at reducing fatalities and protecting users of water transport, particularly in rural and riverine communities.
