Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesperson and political figure, passed away on Friday at the age of 72 after a prolonged battle with illness. He had been fighting the condition for over a decade, suffering a recent relapse before his death.

A respected medical doctor, politician, and strategist, Okupe made notable contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape, including his roles as spokesperson to both former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. He also served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, where his strategic influence played a significant part in the Labour Party’s efforts.

Following his death, numerous political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and Labour Party officials, expressed their condolences and paid tribute to his legacy.

President Bola Tinubu in a statement expressed his sadness over Okupe’s passing, highlighting his contribution to national development. Tinubu described Okupe as a bold advocate for the country’s progress and offered his condolences to his family and the Iperu-Remo community in Ogun State, where Okupe hailed from.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also mourned the loss of a dedicated public servant, praising Okupe’s exceptional diligence and unwavering commitment during their time together. Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State shared his deep personal grief, describing Okupe as an affable, principled man who made remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s resistance against military rule. He reflected on Okupe’s steadfastness during difficult times, particularly his enduring role in fighting for democracy.

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, also mourned the loss of Dr. Okupe, acknowledging his vital role in the party’s 2023 presidential campaign. Abure described Okupe as a team player, focused and diplomatic, who was instrumental in shaping the Labour Party’s efforts.
