Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda. Obasa, who had previously held the position before his removal, was sworn in on Monday, reclaiming his former role.

Meranda’s resignation comes amidst ongoing leadership controversies surrounding Obasa’s removal. She announced her decision during the Monday plenary session, describing it as a “personal sacrifice” aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis within the House.

“I am making this decision to resign as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, with effect from today, 3rd March, 2025,” Meranda said. “This decision was made after careful consideration of all the circumstances surrounding my election as Speaker on January 13, 2025, and the current political turmoil that threatens the unity of the House.”

Meranda explained that her decision was driven by the desire to protect the peace of the assembly and ensure good governance in Lagos. “As a good student of political history, I understand the importance of selflessness in times of crisis. This resignation is to preserve the cohesion and integrity of the Assembly,” she added.

She also expressed gratitude for the support she received during her brief tenure as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly. “With your support, I made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, and I am grateful for the solidarity and collaboration shown during my tenure,” Meranda said.

Meranda emphasized that despite her resignation, she would continue serving her constituents in Agbapapa Constituency I and the people of Lagos. “I am not a quitter. My resignation is a step to prevent further conflict and embarrassment within this legislative body,” she stated.

Before her resignation, lawmakers had praised Meranda’s legislative skills and leadership. After stepping down as Speaker, she was reinstated as the Deputy Speaker, a position she held prior to Obasa’s removal.
