Kano’s Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for peace and unity among residents of the ancient city, urging them to avoid actions that could disturb the harmony of the region. The Emir’s appeal follows a recent ruling by the Court of Appeal, which resolved the ongoing dispute involving his reinstatement as the 16th Emir of Kano and the dethronement of the 15th Emir, Aminu Bayero.
In a statement addressing the public after the court’s verdict on Friday, Emir Sanusi II emphasized that those attempting to stir unrest in the state would ultimately face the consequences of their actions. “The Court of Appeal has confirmed that the Federal High Court has no jurisdiction over matters relating to the emirate council,” Sanusi said, reiterating his belief that the court’s decision was expected.
The Emir further pointed out that the true goal of some individuals in the conflict was to destabilize the region for personal gain. “Despite their efforts, the state has remained peaceful,” he declared, urging residents to continue prioritizing peace and unity. He added, “May those who seek to cause chaos in Kano be consumed by the fire they attempt to ignite.”
Following the ruling, the Kano State Government expressed its satisfaction with the decision, which reaffirmed the legality of the state’s actions regarding chieftaincy matters. At a press conference, state officials, including Attorney General Haruna Dederi and Commissioner for Local Government Mohammed Tajo Othman, praised the Court of Appeal for upholding the government’s reforms to modernize the emirate council while preserving its cultural heritage.
Dederi stressed that the court’s ruling reaffirmed the state’s commitment to fairness and due process, especially in ensuring that traditional structures evolve in line with constitutional boundaries. “All previous decisions by the Federal High Court questioning the state’s authority have now been voided,” he stated. “The law on emirates enacted by the Kano State House of Assembly has been fully validated by the Court of Appeal.”
The state government emphasized the importance of all parties respecting the ruling and joining efforts to maintain the peace and development of Kano. The officials also reiterated the administration’s dedication to supporting traditional institutions and fostering progress across the state.
“We urge all stakeholders to place the collective good of Kano above personal interests and to work together in unity,” the Commissioner added.
