A devastating stampede claimed the lives of several children during a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Oyo State. The event, organized by Women in Need of Governance and Support (WINGS), an initiative by Queen Naomi Silekunola, former wife of the Ooni of Ife, turned tragic as chaos unfolded at the venue.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses report that attendees, including many children, began arriving at the venue as early as 6 a.m., with some reportedly sleeping there overnight. The tragedy occurred when crowds surged violently at the school gate, leading to a stampede.

Children, many underage, fell and were trampled as parents and guardians struggled to enter the venue. Clothes and shoes of victims were seen scattered across the scene, while security personnel worked to clear the remaining crowd.

Government Response

The Oyo State government expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a statement by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government confirmed the loss of lives, mostly children, and injuries sustained by others.

The state swiftly dispatched a rapid response team to transport victims to hospitals across Ibadan, including:

  • Patnas Hospital, Basorun
  • Western Hospital, Basorun
  • Ringroad State Hospital
  • Molly Specialist Hospital
  • University College Hospital (UCH)
  • Adeoyo State Hospital
  • Total Family Hospital, Basorun

Call for Proper Event Coordination

The government clarified that it was not involved in planning the event and urged organizers of large gatherings to ensure proper coordination and safety measures, particularly for events involving vulnerable groups like children and elders.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, activated emergency response teams to manage the crisis. The government awaits a detailed report from the Oyo State Commissioner of Police to confirm the number of victims.

Appeal to Parents

Parents searching for their children were advised to visit the listed medical facilities with valid identification for updates on their wards.
