TUC Denies Mobilizing for Proposed Protest, Emphasizes Citizens’ Right to Demonstrate

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has dismissed rumors suggesting that it is mobilizing to join the proposed nationwide protest against the economic hardship in Nigeria. The union clarified that while it has provided recommendations to the Tinubu-led administration on overcoming the current economic challenges, it is not directly involved in organizing the protest.

Speaking at a media briefing on the state of the nation on Thursday, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo emphasized that no one has approached the union to form a partnership for the protest. However, he reiterated that Nigerians have the right to protest and urged law enforcement agencies to respect this civic right.

“Nobody has contacted the union to secure partnership in a protest. That does not mean that Nigerians cannot protest if they wish to do so. It is the duty of the police and all security personnel to protect them,” Osifo stated.

The TUC president also insisted that the police and other security agencies should not intimidate those interested in protesting, affirming that it is their civic right to do so.
