Why Governor of Kano Ordered The Arrest of Deposed Emir Aminu Ado Bayero

The dethroned Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has issued a circular inviting all district heads to participate in the upcoming traditional Sallah Durbar in Kano State. The circular, referenced KEC/ADM/27C/VOL11 and signed by Senior Councillor Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, also ordered district heads to attend a special meeting with Bayero before Sallah.

Bayero, who continues to reside in the second Emir’s house located in the Nassarawa local government area near the Kano State Government House, has stirred controversy with this invitation. Traditionally, only reigning Emirs are allowed to lead the Sallah festivals, which are significant cultural events symbolizing authority and responsibility within the Emirate.

This announcement has intensified the existing emirship dispute between Bayero and the 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II. The tension dates back to the peak of the Emirate crisis when Bayero’s supporters speculated that he would lead Friday prayers at the Kano City Central Mosque, a role traditionally held by Emir Sanusi.

In response, the Kano State Government has expressed concerns about Bayero’s continued occupation of the second palace, describing it as a security risk. During a press conference on Monday at Government House, Kano, Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Gwarzo highlighted unusual movements of thugs and some top APC members allegedly intent on causing trouble in the state. Gwarzo appealed to President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to investigate the situation and evacuate Bayero from his current residence to prevent any potential security threats.

Bayero’s invitation to the Sallah Durbar is seen by many as a move to gauge his support and loyalty among the district heads, many of whom have already aligned themselves with the reinstated Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II. As the situation unfolds, the potential for increased tension and conflict within the Kano Emirate looms large, posing a significant challenge to the state’s stability and governance.
