In a public lecture held on Tuesday in Abuja to commemorate 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria, former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan urged the country to adopt a more inclusive democratic system. Jonathan warned that the current “zero-sum game” approach is detrimental to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation.

During his opening address, Jonathan highlighted the need for political reforms that promote social cohesion and equitable participation. He emphasized that the winner-takes-all political system undermines political justice and contributes to electoral violence and instability.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Jonathan commended the resilience of the Nigerian people and acknowledged the country’s significant achievements in economic development and peaceful political transitions. He called for a democratic framework that ensures all voices are heard and represented, fostering a more stable and just political environment.

Jonathan’s address serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusive governance in strengthening democracy and ensuring the sustainable development of Nigeria.
