Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has expressed concern over the significant debt burden inherited from the previous administration, stating that it has placed considerable strain on his government’s ability to manage finances effectively. Speaking at a Town Hall Meeting titled “The State of Kaduna State,” Governor Sani disclosed that the debt, which includes $587 million, N85 billion, and N115 billion in contractual liabilities, has necessitated borrowing to meet essential obligations such as salary payments.
Governor Sani highlighted the financial challenges faced by the state, noting that despite receiving only N3.6 billion from federal allocations after deducting N7.2 billion for debt servicing, the state’s monthly salary bill amounts to N5.2 billion. Consequently, the governor emphasized the need to borrow an additional N2 billion to cover salary expenses.
Acknowledging efforts to address the debt burden, Governor Sani revealed that he had appealed to President Bola Tinubu for assistance, who expressed willingness to explore options to alleviate the state’s financial predicament. Additionally, he noted promises from fellow governors to advocate for support from the federal government.
Despite the daunting financial situation, Governor Sani reiterated his administration’s commitment to advancing Kaduna State’s development agenda. He emphasized key priority areas, including safety and security, housing, education, healthcare, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Governor Sani underscored the importance of inclusive development strategies aimed at investing in human capital, stimulating the economy, and providing affordable housing.
Regarding security, Governor Sani outlined measures taken to enhance the state’s security apparatus, such as revamping the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVS), recruiting additional personnel, and strengthening collaboration with security agencies. He highlighted ongoing efforts to develop joint strategies with neighbouring states to combat criminal elements threatening communities.
Governor Sani appealed to citizens, particularly workers, to understand the challenges faced by the state government and assured them of continued efforts to improve governance and address pressing issues.
The Town Hall meeting, attended by various stakeholders including traditional rulers, members of the Kaduna Elders Council, religious leaders, and government officials, provided a platform to discuss critical issues affecting the state and reaffirm commitment to collective progress and development.
