The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has made a fervent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently consider reopening the country’s borders for the importation of foodstuff, aiming to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians amidst a critical hunger crisis.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, following a meeting with the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf highlighted the dire condition of hunger and starvation gripping the nation due to the skyrocketing prices of commodities.
Expressing appreciation for the President’s intervention in the ongoing national food initiative, which is set to be launched in Kano, Governor Yusuf stressed the urgent need for additional measures to address food scarcity. He emphasized that reopening the borders and allowing free importation of commodities could provide immediate relief to the populace.
During the meeting with the Customs Service, Governor Yusuf reiterated the widespread hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly during the sacred month of Ramadan. He emphasized the necessity of opening the borders to alleviate the distress of the people.
The Governor commended the Customs Service for its initiative to distribute food items to the citizens of Kano, acknowledging the importance of such benevolent acts amidst prevailing hardships. He urged the Customs Service to ensure that the distribution reaches those most affected by food scarcity.
Governor Yusuf assured the Customs Service of his unwavering support in endeavors aimed at benefiting Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
In response, CG Adeniyi emphasized the importance of strengthening the bond between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Kano community. He pledged the Service’s commitment to collaboration and mutual understanding, promising to implement policies to improve business processes and engage with stakeholders effectively.
CG Adeniyi also announced comprehensive arrangements by the Customs Service to address the challenges of food scarcity and hardship in Kano, including the distribution of essential food items to residents of the state.
