The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the installation of 30-second biometric clearance gates at all international airports in the country. These facilities, implemented for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), aim to streamline the entry process for passengers in line with international standards.

The biometric gates are equipped to screen and clear passengers within 30 seconds without the need for direct contact with Immigration personnel. This initiative is expected to provide seamless clearance services for travelers arriving in Nigeria through any of the international airports.

According to Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, the 30-second biometric clearance gates will be operational in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, Abuja, and Enugu by March. The distribution of gates will vary, with Lagos having 17 gates, Abuja 10, Port Harcourt and Kano 5 each, and Enugu 4.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that these facilities will significantly enhance the management of international passengers and contribute to national security. The integration of the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) and the Command and Control Centre will enable security agencies to monitor individuals of interest entering the country in real-time.

The Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project, noting that about 70% of the facilities are ready. He praised the quality of work and highlighted the government’s commitment to providing quality services to Nigerians in line with global best practices.

Once operational, the biometric clearance gates will expedite passenger clearance processes while enhancing national security by identifying individuals of interest. The initiative reflects the government’s dedication to modernizing border control management systems and ensuring the safety and efficiency of entry procedures for travelers.
