The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has strongly criticized the remarks made by President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, regarding the ongoing minimum wage debate. TUC described Onanuga’s comments as baseless speculation that could sow discord and undermine trust in the government.
According to TUC, Onanuga’s statement suggesting that it would be difficult for the government to implement a proposed new minimum wage of N100,000 is both insensitive and disconnected from the realities faced by hardworking individuals striving to make ends meet. The union emphasized the need for fair compensation and policies that promote decent wages in line with global best practices.
TUC clarified that negotiations for the new national minimum wage are still in the preliminary stages, and no proposals have been made by any of the negotiating partners, including the presidency. It criticized Onanuga for bandying around figures without engaging in proper dialogue through the negotiating committee.
TUC reiterated its commitment to advocating for a sustainable living wage and urged Nigerians to ignore distractions from individuals like Onanuga who prioritize propaganda over sincere service to the people. The group called for transparency, accountability, and respect for the dignity of all workers, urging the President to act swiftly to restore faith in the government’s commitment to economic justice.
