The Federal Government’s decision to withdraw the charges against rights activist Omoyele Sowore and Adebayo Olawale, also known as Mandate, is a significant development in the legal proceedings against them. The withdrawal of the charges, as indicated by the Notice of Discontinuance filed at the Federal High Court Abuja, reflects a recognition of the need to uphold principles of justice and fairness within Nigeria’s legal system.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, exercised his authority under relevant legal provisions to discontinue the trial. This decision has been commended by legal practitioners, including Abuja-based lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi Esq, who praised the AGF for prioritizing the protection of citizens’ rights and promoting a legal environment that respects fundamental human rights.

Olajengbesi’s statement underscores the importance of safeguarding freedom of expression and ensuring that individuals are not unfairly persecuted for exercising their rights. The decision to discontinue the trial sets a positive precedent for the administration of justice in Nigeria and reaffirms the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.

As advocates for justice and equality, Olajengbesi expressed support for such principled actions and called for continued adherence to the principles of fairness and accountability within Nigeria’s legal system. Overall, the withdrawal of the charges against Sowore and Olawale marks a significant step towards promoting justice and upholding human rights in Nigeria.
