Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka has declared that he will refrain from criticizing President Bola Tinubu until after one year in office, allowing the President time to find his footing. Soyinka, who met with President Tinubu during the Christmas season, stated that he follows a routine of avoiding early criticism of governments until they complete their first year.
Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Soyinka disclosed that he had advised President Tinubu against running for the nation’s top position in the past. He mentioned that he addressed both Tinubu and Atiku, urging them to leave the political stage for younger individuals. Despite his advice being ignored, Soyinka emphasized that he visited President Tinubu during the Christmas season as a friend to check on his well-being.
Soyinka admitted to calling President Tinubu “olorikunkun,” meaning a stubborn person, noting that Tinubu ignored his advice. However, he acknowledged their friendship and expressed his intention to give the President a one-year grace period before passing judgment on his performance.
The renowned Professor explained that he has a personal policy of refraining from commenting on leaders during their first year in office. According to Soyinka, leaders often face challenges starting from below ground zero, and he prefers to observe their progress before making critical assessments.
When asked about his expectations for the Tinubu government, Soyinka mentioned that he brought a seven-point agenda for discussion during the meeting.
