Seun Kuti Regains Freedom After 8-days in Detention for Slapping a Police Officer

The Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has regained his freedom after spending eight days in police custody.

Tuesday evening, the musician was released to his family after satisfying his parole conditions.

The singer’s attorney, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, verified that he was released around 7:30 p.m.

The attorney also disclosed that Seun will be present at the Yaba magistrate’s court on Wednesday for the adjourned proceedings from today.

According to Adeyinka, the purpose of this proceeding is to obtain the advice of the director of public prosecution (DPP).

Seun, the youngest son of the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, was captured on April 15 after he was captured on camera assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge.

On April 16, he was arrested by the state criminal investigation Department (SCID) and brought before the magistrate’s court.

The police had sought a court order to hold him for an additional 21 days pending the conclusion of their investigation.

The court’s chief magistrate, Adeola Olatubosun, ordered the police to hold the musician for an additional 48 hours before releasing him on parole.

Olatubuson extended Seun’s detention by four days on Thursday to allow the police to continue their investigation.

She also ordered that a copy of Seun’s file be sent to the DPP and adjourned the trial until May 22.

The trial was subsequently rescheduled for Tuesday, May 23.

Today, however, the trial was delayed due to the absence of the chief magistrate.

Earlier in the day, demonstrators carrying banners with messages such as “Free Seun Kuti” and “End Police Brutality” were spotted outside the courthouse.
