On Thursday morning in Lagos, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) verified six fatalities and over 84 injuries resulting from an accident involving a railway and a Lagos State government personnel vehicle.

According to the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, “on the arrival of the agency’s response team at the scene of the incident, the investigation revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was reckless driving on the part of the BRT bus driver as he attempted to beat the train road signal before the moving train collided with the BRT bus.”

“Unfortunately, six adults and 84 individuals have sustained significant injuries.

The agency’s medical team (paramedics) and LASAMBUS authorities stabilized the injured victims before transporting them to Ikeja General Hospital and a trauma centre for additional care.

On the scene of the event are the agency’s pre-hospital care section, LASAMBUS officials, Nigeria Police Force, LASTMA, LNSC, and Nigerian Army.

The impacted bus has been removed from the tracks and the train has been rescued by the LASEMA crane as of press time (11 am)

Regular activity has resumed near the accident scene, and traffic toward Ikeja is flowing freely.

In the meantime, the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed astonishment and sadness at the early morning disaster.

The governor, expressing his sorrow, sent his condolences to the families of those killed in the disaster and prayed that God would grant them eternal rest.
