The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) says arrangements have been made to present President Muhammadu Buhari with an award in recognition of his achievements in the defence and promotion of democracy as a system of government throughout the sub-region as he prepares to leave office at the end of his two-term tenure.
The ECOWAS Chairman, Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, stated this on Tuesday during a bilateral discussion with the president in Doha, Qatar, on the margins of the ongoing 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries.
President Embalo stated that President Buhari had done more than anybody else to assist democratic governments in West Africa, as well as fought against the advent of non-democratic regimes with outstanding skill.
In recognition of this, he stated that President Buhari’s name would be included on the Roll of Honour in the community’s new headquarters building in Abuja upon its completion, so that future generations of West African people might learn about his achievements and emulate his exemplary behavior.
In a statement released by his media adviser Garba Shehu, Buhari welcomed the proposal and emphasized that democracy is the most effective means of uniting disparate groups of people and a reliable means of achieving national progress.
