President Muhammadu Buhari asserts that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) redesigned currency strategy has diminished the power of money in Nigeria’s politics.
In a televised speech to the country on Thursday, President Buhari described the development as a departure from the past and a legacy for his administration.
“Fellow countrymen, on February 25, 2023, the nation will elect a new President and members of the National Assembly,” he stated.
“I am aware that this new monetary policy has significantly contributed to the diminution of money’s influence in politics.
This is a positive break from the past and a courageous step by this administration’s legacy towards establishing a solid platform for free and fair elections.
The president advised Nigerians to vote fearlessly for their favourite candidates in upcoming elections and to avoid bloodshed.
“I thus urge every person to vote for their preferred candidates without fear, since security will be given and your vote will count,” he stated.
“However, I urge you to avoid violence and activities that could disturb the electoral processes. I wish us all success in the upcoming general election.”
