Senatorial candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North in the National Assembly election, as declared by the Supreme Court. Supporters of Senate President Ahmad Lawan disrupted an event organized to celebrate the verdict.
The celebration was disrupted when fans began hurling objects towards the state governor, Mai Buni.
The gathering, which was attended by hundreds of party members, also served as the APC’s Yobe North district campaign rally. When the governor stood up to deliver his remarks, trouble began.
As soon as the governor began speaking, the irate supporters, who had just loudly applauded Mr. Lawan, who had spoken before the governor, began to shout rejection slogans: “bwamayi bwamayi bwamaso” – which means “we don’t want you.”
Subsequently, the heckling supporters began to throw things at the governor and other guests in the stadium.
The demonstration ended abruptly when the governor was taken away by security agents.
According to reports, Mr. Lawan’s supporters attacked the governor because they believed he supported Mr. Lawan’s opponent, Bashir Machina, who was the APC candidate before to the Supreme Court’s decision.
