Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it is conducting an investigation into why its Twitter account liked a message about a presidential candidate.

INEC’s official Twitter account liked a post on Wednesday in which Seun Kuti, son of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, criticized Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate (LP).

In the tweet, Kuti referred to the LP candidate as “an opportunist who cannot deliver Nigeria.”

Many Twitter users accused INEC of favoritism in response to the incident, which prompted the commission to face severe criticism.

In response to the incident, however, the commission maintained its neutrality and stated that it has no favourite candidate.

The company noted that it is conducting an investigation and will take disciplinary measures if necessary.

The statement reads, “The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been attracted to a post on its Twitter handle, liking a post on one of the 18 presidential candidates.”

“The Commission is an impartial election body that does not favor any candidate or political party. The Commission assures all Nigerians of its impartiality and will conduct free and fair elections for everybody. The Commission’s allegiance is to the people of Nigeria.

“In the interim, the Commission is conducting an investigation into the circumstances that led to the liking of the aforementioned post and will take necessary disciplinary action if an offense is determined.”
