The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged for calm amid rising protests in sections of the state over a naira note shortage.

The governor disclosed this information in a press release issued on Friday and signed by Gbenga Omotoso, state commissioner for information and strategy.

The governor highlighted that violence is unnecessary.

He guaranteed that he was on top of the situation to ensure that the suffering created by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s naira redesign strategy would not persist.

The statement stated, “The Lagos State Government has taken note with serious concern of this morning’s protests in several parts of the state.” According to reports, the demonstrators are unhappy about the devaluation of the naira and the resulting scarcity that has caused so much misery and uncertainty among our people.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu believes there is no need for violence because the Supreme Court is examining this contentious issue and will issue a ruling on February 22.”

“Lagos State has since joined the legal issue – in the interest of our people – in the idea that the nation’s top court has the authority to rule on the case. The fuel situation is improving as a result of government action.

“The administration commends Lagosians for their tolerance despite the hardships caused by Federal Government policies. Residents should remain law-abiding by avoiding all forms of provocation from mischief-makers. Mr. Governor is collaborating with his colleagues to ensure that this calamity will not continue.
