The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has called on staff of the commission to work collectively to build an electoral body that is trusted by all Nigerians and ensures that every eligible voter is empowered and every vote truly counts.

In his 2026 New Year message titled “A Season of Renewal”, Amupitan expressed confidence that credible elections can be achieved through unity, discipline, integrity, and collective effort as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace.

Renewed Commitment to Democratic Credibility

Addressing national commissioners, resident electoral commissioners, directors, and staff nationwide, the INEC chairman described the New Year as a moment for renewal and a deeper commitment to Nigeria’s democratic journey.

Reflecting on 2025, Amupitan commended INEC personnel for their dedication since he assumed office on October 23, noting that the successful conduct of the Anambra State governorship election reinforced public confidence in the sanctity of the ballot.

Focus on Upcoming Elections

Looking ahead, Amupitan said the commission must intensify preparations for the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections scheduled for February, as well as the off-cycle governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.

He emphasised that preparations for the 2027 general elections remain the commission’s top priority, stressing INEC’s resolve to deliver elections that are free, fair, credible, transparent, and inclusive.

Welfare, Integrity and Public Trust

The INEC chairman reaffirmed his commitment to staff welfare, pledging to foster a professional work environment anchored on equity, discipline, and mutual respect, where every staff member feels valued and empowered to perform optimally.

He urged staff to remain steadfast in upholding integrity and transparency, noting that sustained professionalism and collective responsibility are essential to earning and maintaining public trust in the electoral process.
