President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has directed his legal team to withdraw all ongoing defamation lawsuits filed against several individuals, saying the decision was inspired by a message delivered during a 2026 New Year Mass.

Akpabio made the disclosure on Thursday while addressing worshippers at Sacred Heart Parish, Uyo, where he said the sermon delivered by the priest deeply moved him and prompted reflection.

According to the Senate President, he had previously instituted nearly nine defamation suits against individuals whom he accused of spreading falsehoods and damaging his reputation.

However, he said the priest’s message on peace, forgiveness, and letting go of past grievances resonated strongly with him.

Sermon Inspires Decision to Let Go

Akpabio explained that while listening to the sermon, he felt the message was personally directed at him, compelling him to act immediately.

The priest had emphasised the importance of peace, urging parishioners to live harmoniously with one another and to release past conflicts in pursuit of spiritual and personal renewal.

Moved by the counsel, Akpabio said he instructed his lawyers to formally withdraw all pending defamation cases, bringing an end to the legal battles as the new year begins.

Signals Closure and Reconciliation

The decision effectively closes all ongoing legal disputes arising from the defamation claims and signals a shift toward reconciliation and personal peace.

Observers say the move marks a symbolic fresh start for the Senate President in 2026, underscoring themes of forgiveness and unity at the start of the year.
