The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified the circumstances surrounding a cross-border incident between local vigilante members and Nigerien troops in Mazanya village, Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, which occurred on 29 November 2025 at about 1500 hours.
In a statement, Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, explained that the clarification was necessary to dispel misinformation, reassure citizens, and highlight ongoing efforts to enhance operational coordination with the Republic of Niger.
According to the DHQ, a convoy of four gun trucks and one Toyota Jeep conveying Nigerien soldiers entered Mazanya to fetch water—a longstanding routine practice. However, the unusually large size of the convoy caused concern among local vigilantes, who misinterpreted the movement as a possible hostile incursion and opened fire.
Swift engagement between Nigerian security officials and the Nigerien commander quickly de-escalated the situation. The Nigerien troops completed their water-collection task and safely returned across the border without further confrontation.
The Nigerien commander emphasised the need for prior communication and liaison for future cross-border activities, especially those involving sizeable troop movements or visits by senior military officers. Both sides agreed to implement strengthened communication protocols.
Onoja confirmed that, in line with Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining peaceful relations with its neighbours, the DHQ convened a Joint Border Security Meeting on 1 December 2025. The meeting focused on improving liaison systems between the two countries to prevent similar incidents.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to peaceful coexistence, noting that both nations share deep cultural, economic, and security bonds. Nigeria and Niger continue to collaborate on counterterrorism, anti-smuggling efforts, migration control, and other cross-border security challenges.
The DHQ assured the public that lessons from the incident are being taken seriously and that concrete steps are already being implemented to strengthen border security coordination. Residents of Mazanya, Jibia LGA, and neighbouring communities were urged to remain calm and continue their lawful activities.
“The situation is fully under control, and both Nigerian and Nigerien authorities remain committed to safeguarding civilians along the border,” Major General Onoja said.
