Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, shared his candid insights into the demanding nature of his role, describing it as the most difficult job he has undertaken due to the president’s strong leadership and high work ethic. Speaking at a conversation, book reading, and signing event at the Capital Club in Victoria Island, Gbajabiamila highlighted the complexities of working with a president who is not only well-versed in the job but also maintains a strong vision and knowledge of the country’s needs.
Gbajabiamila, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, spoke openly about the contrast between his previous role and his current position. As Speaker, he explained, he had more freedom, being his own boss with a direct connection to 359 other colleagues. However, as Chief of Staff, he now answers to President Tinubu and manages the broader needs of 200 million Nigerians.
He acknowledged the sacrifices involved, noting that as Chief of Staff, he has lost his personal freedom and must navigate a much larger, more complex scope of responsibilities. “As speaker, I could travel to cool off anytime, just to return better and get the work done. Now, there’s a boss, one who is strong and knows his onions and even knows more than you. But it’s a welcome development,” he remarked.
Political Leadership: Legacy and Challenges
Reflecting on his political journey, Gbajabiamila shared insights into his decision to back Hon. Tajudeen Abbas for Speaker of the House in 2023. He revealed that while other contenders were equally qualified, Abbas had the necessary capacity and pedigree to lead. Gbajabiamila’s endorsement proved pivotal, with every member of the House falling in line, and today, many thank him for his leadership choice.
He also recounted the challenges he faced in his own journey to the speakership, including his first run for the position when he was unexpectedly defeated by Yakubu Dogara, despite his years of experience. He explained that the shock of the result strengthened his resolve and played a role in his eventual emergence as Speaker in 2019. Gbajabiamila also spoke about how his opposition to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third term bid made his own third term election in the House difficult. Despite the challenge, he went on to win re-election four times and eventually ascended to the role of Speaker.
The Importance of Continuous Learning
Gbajabiamila, who is also a lawyer, emphasized the importance of continuous learning for effective leadership. He shared that his favorite book is the Quran and stressed that successful leadership requires ongoing education. “To be a successful leader, you must read and it’s a process. It does not end. You must continue to read,” he advised the audience.
