Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has dismissed allegations that he failed to support President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, stating that he has moved on from such discussions. El-Rufai, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), played a key role in securing Tinubu’s nomination for the presidency, but political tensions have since arisen regarding his level of support.
Tinubu, running under the APC, triumphed in the election against his main challengers—Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party. Amidst the political discourse, El-Rufai has been at the center of claims that he did not offer full backing to the president during the campaign.
An X user, Yusuf Tukur, posting under the handle #realYusufTukur, accused Tinubu’s team of seeking El-Rufai’s support during the election campaign, only to later accuse him of not fully backing the president once he was in office. The tweet claimed, “When they were desperately seeking El-Rufai’s support, #officialABAT and his goons were everywhere singing Malam’s praises. Given their penchant for ingratitude, however, they’ve turned around to claim that Malam didn’t even support PBAT. But these testimonies say otherwise.”
In response, El-Rufai took to his X account, stating that he had no personal expectations from his political actions. He emphasized that his actions were done for the good of the country, the party, and in service to God, and he was unfazed by the unfolding events. “We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well. Thanks, anyway,” El-Rufai wrote.
El-Rufai also used his X account last week to address his stance on governance. He made it clear that he does not engage in political pretense and criticized certain politicians, likening them to actors. “Truly, I don’t know how to pretend. Being a Nollywood actor in governance is for some others, not for some of us,” he remarked, reinforcing his no-nonsense approach to leadership.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, El-Rufai’s comments reflect his determination to remain true to his principles, regardless of his political relationships or roles in the Tinubu administration.
