President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, who died on Tuesday night in Lagos at the age of 56 after a brief illness.

Born on February 28, 1968, Lt. General Lagbaja’s military career was marked by exemplary leadership, dedication, and resilience. He was appointed Chief of Army Staff by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023, following a distinguished career that began in 1987, when he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course.
Throughout his service, Lt. General Lagbaja played key roles in several high-profile military operations across Nigeria. He served as a platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion. His operational experience spanned numerous significant security operations, including Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State, Operation Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States. His leadership and strategic vision were pivotal in addressing the country’s security challenges.

In addition to his practical military experience, Lt. General Lagbaja was committed to continuous professional growth. He earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the prestigious U.S. Army War College, further cementing his reputation as a forward-thinking leader with a deep understanding of military strategy.
