The Presidency has dismissed recent reports claiming that President Bola Tinubu has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, to resign. This followed rumors circulating in the media alleging that Cardoso was instructed to step down due to his failure to stabilize the Naira and address Nigeria’s economic challenges.
Responding to the reports on Tuesday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, took to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @aonanuga1956, to debunk the claims. Onanuga stated, “It’s all lies. President Tinubu has not asked Yemi Cardoso to resign.”
The media report, which quoted unnamed sources, had insinuated that Tinubu was displeased with Cardoso’s performance, leading to the purported call for resignation. However, Onanuga firmly labeled the report as false.
Presidency Addresses Bishop Kukah’s Peace Accord Remarks
On the same day, the Presidency also responded to comments made by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah regarding Tinubu’s participation in the peace accords ahead of the 2023 presidential election. Speaking at the Edo Election Townhall meeting in Benin City, Kukah claimed that Tinubu did not sign a peace accord during his campaign.
Bayo Onanuga countered Kukah’s assertion, providing a timeline of the two peace accords signed by Tinubu. He clarified that the first accord, signed on September 29, 2022, was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, as it committed candidates to a free and credible election. The second accord, signed by Tinubu on February 23, 2023, required the candidates to accept the election’s outcome.
Onanuga emphasized, “Contrary to the claims by Bishop Kukah, President Tinubu signed the two peace accords preceding his election in 2023.”
