Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on the government to fulfill its constitutional duties by protecting Nigerians amid the increasing violence and insecurity in the country. In a statement on his verified X handle on Sunday, Obi expressed deep concern over the ongoing killing spree, emphasizing that it must not continue.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, voiced his sorrow over the recent killing of seven mobile police officers by armed bandits in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. He urged the government to ensure the nation’s safety by apprehending and bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.
“I must, for the best interest of our nation, continue to add my voice against the ever-rising tide of insecurity in Nigeria,” Obi stated. “It has cost us precious lives, caused damage to properties, and denied us opportunities for progress and development.”
He lamented the impact of insecurity on the country, noting that it has not only caused loss of life and property but also restricted the freedom and happiness of the people. “Democracy without freedom from fear is a farce,” he added.
Obi detailed recent incidents of violence, including the killing of seven mobile police officers and five residents by bandits in Zamfara State, the deaths of over 30 individuals in separate attacks in Katsina State, and a terrorist invasion in the Bassa community of Niger State, which resulted in 20 deaths.
“Families are constantly left in agony over the killing of their loved ones by terrorists. Sadly, the monster of insecurity has continued to rear its ugly head in every part of the nation, leaving in its wake, tears, blood, and death,” Obi said.
He called for immediate government action to halt the killings and protect the lives of Nigerians. Obi extended his condolences to the families of the slain police officers, the Nigeria Police Force, and other victims of insecurity across the nation.
“The life of every Nigerian matters and must be protected,” Obi asserted. “We shall overcome. May God grant eternal rest to the dead.”
