President Tinubu’s Energy Reform Directive Highlights FEC Meeting

Nigeria’s Fifth Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting for 2024, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, convened on Monday at the State House, Abuja, with significant decisions continuing into Tuesday. The meeting, which reconvened after a seven-week hiatus, aimed to deliberate on crucial matters impacting the nation.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Information and National Orientation Minister Mohammed Idris announced that far-reaching decisions were made, with deliberations set to resume on Tuesday. Among the key outcomes was President Tinubu’s directive for all government ministries, departments, and agencies to procure compressed-natural-gas (CNG) powered vehicles. This move aligns with Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy sources and aims to reduce emissions while offering a more affordable energy alternative for consumers.

President Tinubu emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to energy reform and directed the rejection of memos seeking the purchase of traditional petrol-dependent vehicles by FEC members. Instead, he urged them to prioritize value-driven procurement of CNG-compliant vehicles, signaling a firm stance on energy transition.

Additionally, FEC ordered that all new vehicles, generators, or tricycles procured by government and its agencies must be powered by CNG, solar, or electric sources. This decision underscores the government’s commitment to harnessing the nation’s gas potential and enhancing the standard of living for all Nigerians.

During the meeting, a minute’s silence was observed in honor of former Ministers Professor Fabian Osuji and Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, who made significant contributions to the nation’s education and science sectors, respectively.

President Tinubu also administered the oath of office to two additional Federal Commissioners of the National Population Commission (NPC), emphasizing the government’s dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities and promoting national development.

The FEC meeting, attended by key government officials, underscores the administration’s proactive approach to addressing critical issues and advancing the nation’s development agenda.
