The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed that it has recovered N30 billion for the Federal Government while also initiating investigations into 50 bank accounts linked to the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, and the former chief executive officer of the now suspended National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA), Halima Shehu.
Both Edu and Shehu were suspended approximately three months ago by President Bola Tinubu over allegations of financial malfeasance. Subsequently, the President suspended the Social Investment Programme and instructed the EFCC to take over the case and probe both embattled officials and anyone else involved.
In an interview with the executive chairman of EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, it was revealed that significant progress has been made in the investigation, underscoring the complexity of the case and the necessity for patience from Nigerians.
Olukoyede, speaking in the March edition of the commission’s monthly e-magazine, EFCCAlert, emphasized that investigations require adherence to laws and regulations. He highlighted the recovery of over N30 billion, which has been remitted to the Federal Government’s coffers. Olukoyede stressed the importance of time in concluding investigations, noting that the process began less than six weeks ago and that such cases often take years to finalize due to the multitude of factors involved.
The EFCC chairman disclosed that the agency is currently scrutinizing over 50 bank accounts connected to the case, indicating the complexity and seriousness of the matter. He reiterated the professionalism of the team handling the investigation and urged Nigerians to exercise patience as the process unfolds.
Olukoyede reassured the public that the EFCC is diligently pursuing leads and discoveries arising from the investigation. He emphasized that due process must be followed, and while the ultimate goal may be to see perpetrators face legal consequences, every step in the investigative process must be meticulously executed.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to wait for the outcome of the investigation, expressing confidence in the professionalism and dedication of the EFCC’s efforts to uncover the truth and ensure justice is served.
