Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, has strongly denounced the recent killing of army officers and soldiers in Delta State, labeling it as barbaric and entirely unacceptable.

In a statement posted on his official social media handle, Obi urged for an immediate investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for justice to prevail.

“This act of violence is barbaric and absolutely unacceptable, and it must not be tolerated by Nigerians or any civilized society,” stated Obi. “At a time when our nation is grappling with heightened insecurity, the loss of our security personnel, who courageously defend our nation, is deeply distressing.”

He continued, “These tragic incidents, alongside numerous cases of killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes across the country, raise significant concerns about our nation’s security. Our security operatives demonstrate immense sacrifice in their line of duty, often paying the ultimate price. It is imperative that we acknowledge and honor their service by extending empathy and ensuring proper healthcare for the wounded.”

The former Anambra State governor advocated for comprehensive compensation and welfare packages for the families of fallen security personnel, emphasizing the importance of community support during such trying times.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased security personnel and their respective security formations, namely the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Police Force,” expressed Obi. “I encourage them to remain resilient in the face of adversity and perceive this as a call to redouble their efforts in safeguarding our nation.”

Obi also called upon the government and security agencies to pursue relentless efforts in investigating, apprehending, and prosecuting those responsible for these despicable acts.

Senators Extend Condolences to Military

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, joined in expressing condolences to the Nigerian Army and the Chief of Defence Staff following the tragic loss of military personnel in Delta State.

In a statement, Senator Yar’adua praised the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by the fallen heroes, emphasizing the need for swift justice against the perpetrators of the crime.

“The sacrifices made by the Commanding Officer, three officers, and 12 soldiers during this distressing incident shall forever be remembered,” said Senator Yar’adua. “Their courage and dedication epitomize the highest ideals of patriotism and sacrifice.”

He pledged the full support of the Senate Committee on the Nigerian Army in ensuring that justice is served and the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, also echoed similar sentiments, urging for a thorough investigation into the root causes of the crisis in Delta State.

While expressing condolences to the bereaved families, Senator Thomas emphasized the importance of strategic intelligence deployment by the military to avoid collateral damage and protect innocent civilians in affected communities.
