Food Crises Looms in Nigeria’s North-west and North-east Regions -World Bank
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The recent Food Security report by the World Bank has raised concerns about severe food crises in several states in the North-west and North-east regions of Nigeria. Katsina, along with six other states including Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe, are identified as areas that may face significant challenges due to high levels of insecurity and armed conflicts.

The report underscores how insecurity has negatively impacted the standards of living in these regions, leading to deteriorating livelihoods and exacerbating food insecurity. It predicts that Nigeria, particularly the mentioned states, will experience crisis food security levels, primarily due to persistent insecurity, armed conflict, and the resulting challenges in sustaining livelihoods.

In response to the looming food crises, the Katsina State Government is taking proactive measures by planning to inaugurate a task force on food prices. This initiative aims to address issues such as food inflation, mass purchase, and sales of foodstuffs across the state, with the goal of stabilizing food prices and ensuring accessibility to essential food items.

The World Bank report underscores the precarious situation faced by many states in Nigeria as food prices continue to rise. It emphasizes the need for concerted efforts to address the root causes of food insecurity, including insecurity and armed conflicts, while also highlighting the importance of implementing measures to stabilize food prices and ensure food accessibility for all.
