Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been released from the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja after fulfilling his bail conditions. A spokesperson for the correctional centre confirmed the release on Saturday, December 22, mentioning that Emefiele regained his freedom on Friday.

Emefiele faces a six-count charge related to the alleged purchase of luxury vehicles amounting to N1.2 billion and the provision of what is described as a “corrupt advantage” during the procurement process. Despite the charges, the former CBN governor was granted bail set at N300 million, requiring two sureties in a similar amount. The sureties are mandated to possess landed properties in the upscale Maitama District of Abuja, with the additional requirement of depositing the Certificate of Occupancy for their properties.

Emefiele’s release on bail signals a development in the legal proceedings against him, allowing him to await further court proceedings outside the correctional facility.
