Senate chief deputy Orji Uzor Kalu has notified the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and 108 Senators-elect of his desire to become the next Senate President via letters.

This is despite the fact that he refuted the widespread rumour that the Senators-elect of the South East had endorsed him, explaining that the South East Senators-elect had only convened to make a demand of the President-elect and the party and had not endorsed anyone.

The party’s NWC endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom State, as its preferred candidate for the position on Monday.

However, in letters he personally signed and addressed to each of the NWC Members and Senators-elect, the former governor of Abia stated that he is proposing himself for the position of Senate President with sincerity, humility, and candour.

Mrs. Ifeoma Ada Kalu, Kalu’s late wife, was in a month-long period of bereavement at the time of his apparent inactivity in the race for the senate presidency.

If elected, he pledged to promote and defend the constitution and nurture an amicable and cordial relationship between the executive and judiciary.

The letter to the party leaders reads, “It is with great pleasure and humility that I extend to you and the Abia North Senatorial zone my warmest greetings.

“My election as Senator to represent Abia North at this crucial moment in the history of our beloved country carries with it enormous responsibilities, the most important of which is to enact laws that promote the good governance of our people.

“In order to accomplish these enviable objectives, we require capable leaders to steer the 10th Senate.

“The 10th Session of a sophisticated Senate will require leaders with an abundance of shared vision, consensus building, charisma, credibility, and pragmatism.

“Because of this, I am writing to respectfully inform you of my candidature for the next Senate President.

“I make this offer with a sincere desire to serve you and the Nigerian people with humility and candour.

“The most valuable asset I bring to the table is accumulated knowledge and experience in the administration of human and material resources.

“I pledge to work for you, to promote and defend the constitution and the party, and to nurture an amicable and cordial relationship among the party, the executive, and the judiciary.

We can take Nigeria to the next level of peace, progress, and development if we labour together in unity, love, and respect for one another.
