Ike Ekweremadu, a former deputy senate president, and his wife, Beatrice, are scheduled to be sentenced in the United Kingdom.
The decision of the upper legislative chamber was based on a motion sponsored by minority whip Chukwuka Utazi.
The lawmakers implored the British court to “balance justice with mercy” in the Friday sentencing of the lawmaker.
The senator for Enugu West was found guilty of attempting to harvest an organ from a 21-year-old for his daughter Sonia’s treatment.
Wednesday on the Senate floor, Utazi stated that the upper legislative chamber is not contesting the verdict but is requesting leniency from the British court.
Utazi stated that while not a legal alibi, Ekweremadu may have been unaware of the organ transplant procedure in Western nations.
The motion was approved after Senate President Ahmad Lawan submitted it to a vote.
Lawan reiterated the sentiments of the minority whip, stating that Ekweremadu has contributed “a lot” to the Nigerian parliament.
The senate’s action occurred one day after the House of representatives appealed to the British government and parliament on behalf of Ekweremadu.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila stated on Tuesday that “it behoves any government to plead for clemency when its citizens are in such a predicament.”
