The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, announced on Saturday that the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, would be temporarily closed due to the collapse of a floodlight mast.
Dare disclosed this information in a statement after examining the collapsed floodlight mast.
On Friday, the Minister paid a pre-scheduled visit to the stadium, promising to reveal his stance after proper evaluation.
Following a tour of the stadium, the minister ordered its closure to prevent unanticipated occurrences.
“Thank God no one was injured. After 51 years, I also inspected the three other light masts, and their age and exposure to the elements made it apparent that they too are suspect.
“Based on my assessment, the advice of experts, and in the interest of public safety, the stadium and adjacent facilities will be temporarily closed; a thorough assessment and appropriate action will be taken shortly.
“The concession procedure towards fully privatising the Surulere stadium, which began last year, will be expedited by the Federal Government through the ICRC in order to ensure a thorough rehabilitation and upgrade of the 51-year-old structure.
“We have chosen to err on the side of caution, hence the decision to implement stringent restrictions around the stadium.
The minister stated, “We request the cooperation of anyone who this decision may inconvenience because we cannot ascertain the situation on the ground.”
