NFF Refutes Firing Super Eagles’ Technical staff, Finidi George and Ike Shorounmu

The Nigeria Football Association issued a statement refuting media claims that it fired two members of the Super Eagles’ technical staff, Finidi George and Ike Shorounmu.

As part of the cost-cutting measures implemented at the start of the new administration, we devised a policy of rotation among the assistant coaches, depending on their high number, which was agreed upon by all of them. Mr. Finidi George was the individual who travelled to Portugal for the friendly match the last time the team had a schedule. This policy only applies to matches. When there is a tournament, they will all be present.

He understood at that time that Mr. Usman Abdallah would be travelling next. Abdallah is simply taking his turn in camp for the Super Eagles vs. Djurtus of Guinea Bissau programme, and Mr. George will be present for the following programme.

Mr. Salisu Yusuf, the other potential competitor, has been assigned to the U23 squad. No victimisation, deception, or disrespect was intended against our renowned former international players.

The case of goalkeepers’ coach Ike Shorounmu is fairly unique, as the former Nigerian goalkeeper exhibited a distinct lack of interest in being in camp for the matches against Guinea Bissau.

We do not wish to go into specifics since we hold all of our former internationals, including Mr. Shorounmu, in the highest regard. Coach Peseiro asked the services of Olatunji Baruwa, whom he had observed working during the U20 AFCON in Egypt, to assist with training the goalkeepers only after receiving the clear indication that the goalie would not be attending.

We concur that there are a number of issues regarding the contracts of National Team coaches that require prompt resolution. The NFF is addressing these concerns, and they will soon be resolved.
