The National Population Commission (NPC) reports that the postponement of the gubernatorial and state assembly elections is likely to delay the start of the 2023 national housing and population census, which was originally scheduled to begin on March 29.

Mr. Nasir Kwarra, chairman of the National Population Commission, stated this during a meeting in Abuja with the resident representative of the United Nations Population Fund.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has rescheduled the previously scheduled state elections for March 18 instead of March 11. (INEC).

Mr. Kwarra informed reporters that he will speak with President Muhammadu Buhari to determine a good date for the national census, despite the fact that no date has been set for the beginning of the exercise.

Ms. Ulla Mueller, resident representative of the United Nations Population Fund, committed UNFPA’s assistance in ensuring the success of the exercise.

Mueller stated that the conduct of a post-enumeration survey will also lend legitimacy to the census, while stressing the significance of the exercise to the achievement of the sustainable development goal.

In support of the post-enumeration survey, UNFPA donated sixteen high-capacity computers for its execution.
